Extracurricular Activities: A Help or A Detriment
Jim has just gotten home from a track meet and still has tons of English, math and science homework to do. Similar to Jim, everyone has come home from an extracurricular activity with tons of homework. Focusing just on sports could possibly harm students by not having passing grades. However, that same focus on sports can help them stay in shape and possibly achieve athletic scholarships.
Extracurricular activities may be more fun than academics, but not necessarily more important . For example, three girls on the JV softball team failed the six weeks causing them to not be able to participate. In the process that also made the JV team not have enough to play and not have a JV team at all. In addition, a lot of teens are in extracurricular activities that aren’t involved with school such as club volleyball, soccer, or even select basketball. They still don’t do their homework because they care more about the sport they are playing. Too often, kids think only about what sport they are best at. Whether it be basketball, soccer or track, without passing classes, they are not able to play at all.
Being involved in extracurricular activities can help you stay in shape and possibly get a scholarship to get into college. For example, in athletics, you always have to work out to stay in shape for the sport you are participating in. Take basketball for instance, you constantly run up and down the court dribbling, passing, and shooting the entire game. To do so, athletes need to be in shape or they are of no help to the team. In addition, being in extracurricular activities can help pay for part of their college. However, they must have good enough grades to be accepted into a school first. If you are a good athlete, there is a possibility of scholarships being awarded.
Jim finished all his homework that night and a few years later was accepted into a university with good grades and a scholarship in track. Therefore, extracurricular activities may harm students that cannot manage their time by causing their grades to fall but can help them stay in shape in order to possibly receive scholarships in athletics.
